Defining Serious Games

Unlike casual games wherein people play the games for entertainment purposes, “serious games” tend to be the complete opposite. In the video gaming industry, the term refers to computer games that are created for a main purpose rather than for entertainment. A serious game is often designed with a concept revolving on a real-life issue such as education, health care, city planning and national defence. The game is often used in training key people to understand concepts involved in their field of work such as business operations. Serious games can be of any genre and can also be used for simulation, education or advertising. As an example, a business-related serious game may look like any other entertaining video game but will contain scenarios and issues that simulate events that real-world businesses will face.
