The Rating Process
As the game enters the testing phase, during its final development, publishers send responses to an ESRB questionnaire. Publishers likewise send materials related to the game. All pertinent content must be disclosed since the ESRB checks all materials for completeness. The video game is then reviewed by three trained ESRB professionals who typically have experience with children. The professionals submit recommended rating category and content descriptors, which are later subjected to deliberation.
Game testing phase
The ESRB then issues a certificate with the official rating category and content descriptors, plus a rating summary. Publishers may either accept the official rating or revises the game content. They may also appeal an ESRB rating assignment. Publishers must send final copies of the product to the ESRB once the game is ready for mainstream release. The ESRB re-evaluates the final product to confirm accurateness of past review and the completeness of the materials previously submitted by the publishers.
